The History of the Automobile

Carl Benz

  • Cars have been around for about 120 years.
  • A patent is a government authority or license confirming a right to title for a set period, especially to the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention.
  • Carl Benz used patentmotocar to describe the car.
  • His wife drove his invention, this created the invention of the first petral station.
  • This system helped solve the problem of steering the two front wheels at the same time.
  • The merge created the name "Mercedes Benz"
  • Benz got to see his dream come true.

Henry Ford and the Model T

  • The assembly line sped up manufacturing practices by making 10 cars in the time it took other companies 1 by hand.
  • The model T's were introduced 1909 and sold for $950.
  • Henry Ford reduced the work day from 9 hours to 8 hours so he could have people working around the clock, but in 3 shifts.
  • The model T had 20 horsepower.
  • Three of the body styles that were manufactured were 2 door, 4 door and convertible.
  • 15 million model T's were produced.
  • To start it, you had to hand crank it but it was fairly easy to start because the motor was small.
  • It was built to handle all road types because most roads weren't fully developed, if there was even a road at all.

My Video Selections

1.) The Assembly Line: Then and Now

-Henry Ford invented the assembly line in 1910.
-It took 16 hours to build the cars before the introduction of the assembly line.
-Workers took on repetitive jobs, which made them feel like robots.
-With more technology available today, 250 robots take the place of workers in the factories.

2.) Invention of the Automobile:

-In the 1880's Carl Benz and his friend were the inventors of the gasoline automobile.
-The first automobile used to use the steam engine as the main source of power. But it was hard for the passengers in the car to site by the hot steam engine so they invented the gas powered automobile.
-Henry Ford was inspired by the early steam engine when he was just a young boy, and he was the one who brought the gas powered vehicle to the public eye.
-The price of the model T had dropped from 850$ to 250$.

Automobile Timeline

  • It's surprising to me that Henry Ford made 10,660 cars in his first year of production, maybe it's just me but that seems like a lot, especially for so early into car making.
  • It's cool that people could operate a hand and a foot brake at the same time, some people these days can't even use one.
  • It's also cool that a blind man designed the first cruise control system, just by ear.
  • I think airbags should have been standard before the 1970s, especially with features like cruise control and air conditioning being already installed.
